Nelson Mandela International Day

On July 18, the flagship site of the "UchimZnayem" Project celebrated Nelson Mandela International Day for the fifth consecutive year, recognizing the contribution of the former President of South Africa to peace, human rights, and freedoms.

In the lead-up to the holiday, lessons were held in hospital schools where children undergoing long-term treatment studied Nelson Mandela's biography and his struggle against apartheid. The children discussed interesting facts about the leader's life, created thematic wall newspapers, watched and discussed films about Nelson Mandela, drew his portraits, and participated in the "67 Minutes of Good Deeds" campaign.

Today, the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology hosted a visit by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Association of Russia, Vice-President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, Head of the UNESCO Chair at MGIMO, Mr. Aleksei Borisov; the Head of the United Nations team in Russia, Director of the United Nations Information Center in Moscow, Mr. Vladimir Kuznetsov; and representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa. Children from other sites joined the event online.

The guests spoke to the children about the significance of this holiday and how Nelson Mandela's ideas are linked to the principles of hospital pedagogy.

"The 'UchimZnayem' Project is beneficial for our entire society and operates in dozens of regions across the Russian Federation. I want to thank its leader, Mr. Sergey Sharikov, for addressing the issue of accessible education for children in need of long-term treatment. This allows them to receive a school education on an equal basis with their peers. I am confident, children, that those of you studying in this school will become stronger and will first overcome your problems and then be ready to tackle the issues facing the global community," emphasized Mr. Aleksei Borisov.

Mr. Vladimir Kuznetsov read a greeting from the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and addressed the children with a call to make Nelson Mandela's life path an example of overcoming adversity. "I am sure you have a lot of strength and desire; you will overcome these temporary difficulties and hardships. The UN and the 'UchimZnayem' Project will build a better future for everyone," noted Mr. Vladimir Kuznetsov.

The South African diplomats thanked the teachers and students for their sincere interest in Nelson Mandela's legacy and expressed hope that the world will always remember his lessons and uphold his ideals.
