UNA-Russia’s side-event "Russian regions and businesses for international and multisectoral exchange of practices in reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions " on the margins of the HLPF 2024
On July 10, 2024, the United Nations Association of Russia held the side-event "Russian regions and businesses for international and multisectoral exchange of practices in reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions" on the margins of the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF). The event was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in New York, MGIMO University and the UN Information Center in Moscow.
The participants were welcomed by Mr. Dmitry Chumakov, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in New York; Mr. Vladimir Kuznetsov, Director of the UN Information Center in Moscow; and Mr. Ruslan Aliev, Chairman of the Committee on Ecology and Sustainable Development of the UNA-Russia.
The event was moderated by Mr. Aleksei Borisov, Secretary-General of the United Nations Association of Russia, Vice-President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, Head of the UNESCO Chair at MGIMO University.
The thematic session focused on exchanging experiences in implementing innovative and crisis-resilient policies and solutions aimed at accelerating efforts to combat poverty, achieve peace and justice, and establish partnerships for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, specifically targeting the goals reviewed at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF): Goals 1, 3, 13, 16, and 17.
A special highlight of the event was the presentation of the eighth edition of the UNA-Rusia Program Report "Regions of Russia and the UN Sustainable Development Goals," which featured Moscow's Local Review of Progress on the SDGs. This Review is based on the methodology developed by UN-Habitat—The Global Urban Monitoring Framework (UMF). This monitoring system integrates various urban indexes and assessment tools, including the SDGs and the New Urban Agenda, helping to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the area on the path to sustainability. In addition to Moscow's UMF profile, the Review includes descriptions of various sustainable projects and practices of the capital aimed at sharing experiences and forming new partnerships. These were elaborated during the event by Ms. Tatiana Naumova, Head of Official Events and Protocol Division of the Department for External Economic and International Relations of Moscow.
The event also actively involved other regions of Russia. Presentations were given by Ms. Marina Epifantseva, Deputy Head of the Investment Development Agency of the Republic of Tatarstan, and Mr. Dmitry Vaskov, Head of the International Department of the Ministry of International and Foreign Economic Relations of Sverdlovsk Oblast.
Based on the discussions and presented sustainable practices, the UNA-Russia will prepare a summary with recommendations to be submitted to the Secretariat of the High-Level Political Forum.
